Performance Academy, Newcastle College
The Performance Academy is the UK's largest education facility to house music, performing arts and media education under one roof.
The new building was opened on schedule in September 2004 to a new generation of actors, dancers, musicians, technicians and all types of professionals in the cultural industries. Its contents are diverse and span the entire creative spectrum.
The design team viewed the project as a "workshop". A robust, stimulating and vibrant place encouraging experimentation and collaboration between client, design and construction teams alike. Reflecting this is a bold and concise services design driven by a highly rational grid creating clarity and buildability. Plant areas were centralised within the core of the building to minmise primary service routes whilst a modular approach to terminal systems provided the flexibility required.
